Getting your car to look like it just rolled off the showroom floor takes some careful attention and the right products for the job.
In this guide, we’ll break down the key areas of car detailing and show you how using the best products can help protect your ride and keep it looking great. And if you’re not sure which products to choose, Rain-X has you covered!
Interior Detailing: Deep Cleaning and Protection
A clean and well-maintained interior is the first step to an enjoyable drive so you might want to start by clearing out any personal items and give the seats, carpets and floor mats a good vacuum to get rid of any loose dirt and debris.
Step 1: Upholstery and Carpet Cleaning
To get rid of stubborn stains and embedded dirt, it’s essential to use a good fabric and carpet cleaner. Rain-X’s Upholstery & Carpet Cleaner with Repellent is specially formulated to penetrate fabric fibres and remove stains while waterproofing treated surfaces. Its waterproofing component creates an invisible shield that repels liquids, preventing future accidents.
Step 2: Dashboard and Screen Maintenance
To help protect your dashboard and screens from dust and UV rays over time, using an adapted cleaner and protectant is key. To keep these surfaces looking fresh, we recommend trying our Dash & Screen Cleaner & Protectant. Easy to use and reinforced with Rain-X invisible anti-static coating technology, it keeps your automotive interior cleaner for longer and leaves behind a fresh fragrance.

Exterior Detailing: Washing, Protecting and Enhancing
Step 1: Washing
The first step to a top-quality shine is to clean your bodywork. And there’s nothing better than a good shampoo and the right technique. If you don’t know which shampoo to choose, we recommend High Foam Wash & Wax.
Thanks to its innovative Ceramic Si-O technology, this shampoo cleans and forms a shield against UV rays and other contaminants. What’s more, Ceramic technology is combined with Rain-X’s hydrophobic technology, creating optimum protection against the elements. So you get the best of both worlds.
Now that we’ve talked about product, let’s talk technique. For perfect cleaning, several techniques can be used.
- The 2-bucket technique:
The 2-bucket technique, often used by professionals and enthusiasts, involves using 2 buckets when washing the car.
The first contains clear water for rinsing and the second a mixture of water and shampoo. The rinse bucket will be used only to rinse your microfibre glove so that it is free of impurities and doesn’t create micro-scratches during washing. The second bucket will be used to remove the shampoo and clean your bodywork.
You can see this technique in action in this video:
- The 2-glove technique:
To go even further, you can also use 2 gloves: one for the upper part of your car (up to the middle of the door) and a second for the lower part, which is often dirtier. This will reduce the risk of micro-scratches.
- Professional advice:
Our final tips for professional cleaning:
- Rinse your microfibre well in the rinse water between each part cleaned.
- Don’t press down on your microfibre and don’t rub too hard. Often, the weight of your hand and the water-soaked glove is enough.
Step 2: Drying
For a beautiful finish, you must not neglect the drying stage, for two reasons.
Firstly, to avoid water marks and secondly, water that dries on its own can damage the varnish over time.
In fact, water is often loaded with mineral particles and limescale which, as it dries, will become embedded in the varnish and dull the bodywork. The longer you leave your vehicle to dry in the open air, the more complicated it will be to remove these marks and residues without going through the polishing process.
So, the easiest thing to do is to dry your car, and there’s nothing very complicated about that. All you need is a microfibre cloth, preferably thick and absorbent, which will soak up the water without creating micro-scratches. There are microfibres specially designed for drying.
Once you’ve got your microfibre, all you have to do is wipe the entire bodywork.
Pro tip: a slightly damp microfibre towel is more effective at absorbing water than a dry one.
And don’t neglect the nooks and crannies: grilles, window seals, under windscreen wipers, etc., as these are places where water can collect and stagnate.
Step 3: Wheel and tyre maintenance
Of all your car’s components, tyres are by far the most exposed to damage. Brake dust, road grime, mud and UV rays constantly compromise the appearance of your wheels and make them difficult to clean. To keep your rims looking their best, use Graphene Wheel Cleaner & Protectant designed to make cleaning your tyres as easy as pie.
Formulated with advanced Graphene nanotechnology, this all-in-one wheel cleaner not only cleans, shines and protects alloy wheels, but also leaves a long-lasting graphene coating that protects against brake dust and the elements, keeping your wheels looking pristine for longer and reducing the frequency of cleaning.

Step 4: Finishing
To achieve a mirror-like shine, it’s important to use a wax to polish your bodywork. It may seem tedious, but don’t worry. Rain-X has thought of everything! Our Instant Wax has been specially designed to give your car a glossy finish in just a few minutes.

Glass Care: Clarity and Rain Repellency
Keeping your car’s glass clean isn’t just about looks – it’s essential for safe driving. Smudges, dirt and water spots can reduce visibility, especially in bad weather, so it’s worth giving your windows a little extra attention.
For an easy and effective clean, you can try using our 2-in-1 Glass Cleaner + Rain Repellent. Just spray it onto the glass, wipe away dirt and smudge with a microfiber cloth and buff for a streak-free shine. The added rain-repellent properties help water bead up and roll off, making it easier to see during rainy drives.
